The Lifeboat Game

There is a ferry sailing between two harbours in Iceland. It is just past midnight, it is dark and there is fog. Halfway through the journey the ferry sinks. You lose conciousness and fall into the sea. Some minutes later you wake up alone in a lifeboat and you have no idea how you got there but you can take ten people aboard the boat with you. You get to choose from these people:

  1. A doctor who has been unfaithful to his wife and was in fact returning from Reykjavík after a fling with his secret lover. He has three children and eight grandchildren (M/60)

  1. A priest from the Icelandic lutheran church. He has no children (M/27)

  1. An Imam (a priest) from the new mosque in Reykjavík. He is black and comes from Somalia and has a wife and 4 children (M/28)

  1. A man waiting trial for murder. He used to be a fisherman and can navigate the boat (M/37)

  1. A weird man claiming to be in possession of some government secrets that must reach their destination (M/41)

  1. A boy who boarded the ferry in a wheelchair but is now clinging on to a plastic box in the sea and can´t move below the waist (M12)

  1. A single mother of two children that are waiting for her to come home after a week in hospital (F/32)

  1. A Jordanian restaurant owner, married with 3 children at home (M/40)

  1. A Catholic nun who is also a supervisor at girl´s school (F/46)

  1. A writer that has in the past written some best sellers but has not written a book for ten years He gets by on writers grants from the government. He is divorced, has two children an one grandchild (M/55)

  1. An Irish man, studying pharmacy at an Icelandic university (M/23)...

  1. And his boyfriend, an American man, studying to be a teacher (M/22)

  1. An Icelandic neo-nazi that hates muslims. He is, however, in possesion of some water bottles and threatens to cut them open unless he gets a passage on the boat (M/22)

  1. A woman who is a drug addict and was on her way to Reykjavík to buy drugs to use and sell in her home town. She used to be a nurse and once saved the life of a man who was dragged unconcious from the sea (F/37)

  1. A bank manager. He has never done anything wrong has been a pillar of his community for many years. He is a freemason (M/51)

    16.  A truck driver returning home from a holiday (M/24)...

    17.  And his wife, a hairdresser, travelling with him. They have have no children (F/23)

Seven people must remain in the sea and probably die. Pick the ten you will take aboard and justify your decision. Likewise, justify why you let the others drown. There are no alternatives.

Have fun :)
